The Access-AriZe Belt was invented and developed  following a terrible accident on a para-transit vehicle, when a passenger using a wheelchair tipped off a lift on a bus falling 4 feet to the ground while still attached to his mobility device. We were asked to come up with something that could help to prevent this from happening again that would not require any modification of the lift.
We were very fortunate to have a fleet of 120 buses at our disposal to test and improve the belt, following feedback from our drivers.

Following exerts are from a  taped interview with Mrs. Watson, wife of Harvey Watson, an access-a-Ride passenger who uses an electric wheelchair. Regarding the incident involving the safety strap that occurred when Driver, Maggie Burrall was deboarding Mr. Watson."He almost came off, had it not been for the strap he would of came off. The strap was really there for him"
 Maggie also said that she believed that "Mr Watson was saved from very serious injury that day by the belt".


Carl Bishoff  said: "The new safety straps that have been installed on our buses, on the lift, and are very definitely a great safety device.  They are sturdy and very easy to use with passengers."
