Assisting passengers to board a bus

  • Position the vehicle where ground is as level as possible.
  • Ensure that the area where the lift will unfold is clear of people or obstacles.
  • Lower the lift to the ground until the safety plate at the end of the lift unfolds flat to the surface. 
  • Unfasten the front belt.(rear belt remains fastened)
  • Ask the passenger’s permission to move him/her into position on the lift.
  • Push the wheelchair from the front onto the lift so it faces outward. 
  • The wheelchair should be placed as far back on the vehicle-side of the lift as possible.
  • With an electric device request that the operator back on to the lift and stop when the device is as close to the rear of the lift as possible. Ask passenger to turn the scooter off. If needed offer to assist positioning of the electric mobility.
  • Set the brakes on the wheelchair.
  • Secure the lift’s front safety belts.(rear belt remains fastened)
  • Ask your passenger to grip the yellow handles.
  • Stand on the ground beside the lift nearest to the control handset, maintaining hand contact with the wheelchair at all times when it is on the lift.
  • Alert the passenger that the lift is about to rise.
  • When the lift is about a foot off the ground, kick the safety plate at the end of the lift to see that it is secure.
  • When the lift reaches the floor level of the vehicle and stops, inform your passenger that you will meet them in the bus.
  • Enter the vehicle through the passenger door, unfasten the rear safety belt and pull the wheelchair into the securement area. Set the brakes on the wheelchair.
  • With an electrical device ask the passenger to wait for assistance, enter the bus and unfasten the rear safety belt, ask the passenger to turn on the scooter, back into a securement area on the bus, and turn the scooter off again.
  • Fasten the belt, stow the lift and secure the lift doors.
  • Complete the wheelchair securement procedure.

       Assisting passengers to de-board a bus

  • Ensure that the area where the lift will unfold is clear of people or obstacles.

  • Unfold the lift to the floor level of the bus.

  • Unsecure the passenger's mobility device then unfasten the rear belt.

  • Assist the passenger onto the lift and set the brakes or have them turn off the power.

  • Fasten the rear belt on the lift (front belt remains fastened)

  • Ask your passenger to hold on to the yellow handles.

  • Inform your passenger that you will meet them outside the vehicle.

  • Stand on the ground beside the lift nearest to the control handset, maintaining hand contact with the wheelchair at all times when it is on the lift.

  • Alert the passenger that the lift is about to move.

  • Lower the lift to the ground until the safety plate at the end of the lift unfolds flat to the surface.

  • Unfasten the front belt.

  • Assist your passenger of the lift platform.

  • Fasten the front belt, all belts must be fastened before you stow the lift and secure the lift doors.
